Tiny Barro Bruñido Tortuga

Tiny Barro Bruñido Tortuga

18.00

Very rare and adorable little barro bruñido (burnished clay) turtle made in Tonalá, Jalisco probably in the 1940s or 50s, but recovered in Portland. This darling tortuga was made from local clay and painted with natural clay-based paint. Before the firing process, it was burnished with the mineral pyrite to give the piece the soft natural sheen. This tradition dates back for hundreds if not thousands of years.

Displays slight patina consistent with age (scuff mark shown in the picture has since been removed however). Turtle is approximately 3.5'' wide.
